Some Low Cost Science Experiments for Kids

Remember those science experiments you had to do in school? Remember how we put it off until the night before it was due? Asking your parents for help at the last minute was hard. You may be asked to help your child out the next time they have to do a science experiment. Starting it can be tough so here are some ideas worth considering.

If you have trouble getting it started here are some ideas that may help. One of these ideas may be helpful if you need more of a display: Check out some seashells and see what animals live in them, you can either draw your information or if you have some, glue them to the board. If you have the Internet available to you try to get some pictures of different cloud types and describe them. For a different approach take some cotton and make your own clouds, make them like the different types of clouds and then label them. Food ripens at different stages you can show this on your project. In a warm area in your home take a banana, or other fruit leave it there, another one can be left out at normal temperature and another kept in a cooler environment. Have a notepad so that you can check them and write down your findings. Different ice shapes may melt at different times; see if there is a pattern. Pour equal amounts of water into the containers and then put them in the freezer. Take the containers out of the freezer, allow them to melt and record how long each one took to melt. Making a tornado is one idea for your science project. Fill a jar about ? way with water; Get some food coloring and around 1 teaspoon of dish detergent and put them in the jar. Once you have put the lid on the jar shake it really well. Watch how the liquid that is in the jar will form a vortex that acts just like a real tornado. Take some monopoly houses and put them in the jar before shaking it up for a little extra touch.

Here is one really great inexpensive project that did not turn out as expected, but still won 2nd place. The question was would plants grow better in plain water or sugar water. The child predicted the sugar water would make the plants grow better. Take sunflower seeds and plant several in two identical pots (can be cups or whatever else you may have), water one with plain tap water and the other with the sugar water. Take detailed notes on when, or if; they sprouted. If you can take pictures during the experiment that is great, but if not, just be as detailed as you can. On this particular project the plant with the sugar water did sprout, but it appeared to rot more each day while the other plant did very well. The child finished all the notes, etc. and the next evening during the science fair she had to explain to the judges that their hypothesis was incorrect and why. She used the example of how sugar and sweets can rot your teeth. Imagine her surprise at winning 2nd place on her failed experiment! The judges told her that is what science is all about, finding what works or doesn?t work. And, they said they were pretty impressed that the child had gone ahead and put on a great display, in spite of being worried about the experiment failing.

Video Games and Obesity

<!– @page { size: 8.5in 11in; margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } –>

It shouldn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that video games and obesity are linked. I have to admit that I am a little jealous and grateful at the same time that the technology of today was not around when I was a child. Video games can be fun and are definitely addictive. Overweight children generally live more sedentary lifestyles and are socially less active. They have more idle time and since video games can be so addictive they find themselves playing games for entertainment. The implications of this is that playing video games could cause obesity rather than obesity being a cause of playing video games.

Comparing video games and obesity to television viewing it would seem fairly obvious that television viewing is the worse of the two evils. Most traditional video games require the use of two hands to operate the game controller. One could theorize that while playing video games children are snacking less and are not exposed to advertisements promoting unhealthy foods. Of course, the downside to this theory is the “pause” button. Additionally studies have shown that heavier children spend more time in sedentary activities than thinner kids do. Children with lower body mass indexes are more likely to use computers for non-game purposes, and their video game usage varies.

Because of video games and obesity the manufacturers of electronic games have had a bad reputation over the years. But just like any good business they have come up with a solution that may very well be an answer to childhood obesity. Integrated game consoles such as Nintendo Wii have opened up a whole new perspective on physical activity. “Children burn more than four times as many calories per minute playing an active video game than playing a seated game, and their heart rate is also significantly higher with the active game”, according to a report in the September issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

The Nintendo Wii game is user friendly and entertaining for everyone including spectators. It comes with 5 sports games: bowling, golf, boxing, tennis, and baseball along with other features such as a body mass index calculator and a tracking system for up to 8 users. The game is played by using the controller in a similar fashion as you would a bowling ball or golf club. Another popular game is the XaviX gaming system. Quite similar to the Nintendo Wii system except it also sports games that involve more physical activity such as jogging by use of a gaming mat called the XaviX-J-Mat.

It is refreshing to know that video games and obesity have hope. Video games do come with a price tag but when it comes to your childs health it is worth the investment. Extertainment games could pay for themselves when you consider the savings from medical bills, emergency room visits, and other costs associated with obesity treatment. If you find yourself in a no win situation with the kids and video games this may be a positive solution for the whole family to enjoy. Dr. David Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine, “the power of technological progress can be converted from foe to friend with regard to the health of children” by being tapped to provide a meaningful source of physical activity (Reinberg, HealthDay, 9/1/08; Mellecker/McManus, Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, September 2008]). While these may prove to be beneficial, parents should encourage outdoor activity to further help prevent obesity.

Network Marketing And Effective Time Management

Are you finding it difficult to have the time to build your network marketing business. Or maybe you have people in your downline or prospects who tell you they don’t have time? If you are working full time and have a family it can be a challenge.  Here are a few tips to help you.

One thing you might consider doing is getting up an hour earlier, before the kids are up, this can be a good time to blog, work on your newsletter, or even make phone calls to prospects, depending of course what time zone you are in. I’m in the pacific zone, so 6 AM to me is already 9 AM to someone in New York.

Alternatively, if you don’t like to get up early then perhaps the last hour or two before you wind down for the day could be good. If calling prospects or downline members is not feasible at this time, again it can be good to do some online work. The one thing about this is that often people are mentally tired at this time, and may not be as sharp as they are at noon. However, some people work well late at night.

If you have young children, perhaps your spouse can take them out to the park or do other activites with them while you are working your business. You don’t want the distraction of kids shouting or your dog barking anyway when you are on the phone. If your kids are old enough to understand, it’s a good idea to let them know what you are planning on accomplishing with your business so they will be understanding. Most women with a family want to build a business so they can stay home with their kids. It definitely helps to have a supportive spouse.

Another thing to consider is we often tend to waste time on such things as watching the news, or evening TV for an hour or so, when this time could have been put to productive use making phone calls or doing other activities that will grow your business.

If you have a job and a cell phone, you may be able to call prospects, customers or people in your downline on your lunch break. Of course you never want to do these things on company time. But your lunch hour is yours to do with as you please. Maybe instead of spending the hour socializing or reading a book you could work your business.

What matters the most is not necessarily the quantity of time you have, but the quality. An hour spent following up with a prospect, calling your new customer, and posting on your blog as three examples will help you a lot more than spending hours on social networking sites, surfing the web, or any other activity that does not directly help you grow your network marketing business.

Behavioral Science Projects – Seeing How Humans Behave

Behavioral science projects are often chosen by students preparing for the science fair. These projects explore the behavior of a quirky and strange creature – the human being! Behavioral projects are a lot of fun, allowing kids to learn a lot about science and psychology while meeting people and developing their social skills. Before you or your child chooses to do a project on human behavior, check with your teacher. Some will not allow behavioral science projects because of the difficulty of getting a large enough sample size.

Once a project is approved, however, the next step is to actually recruit subjects (humans!) for the study. Here are some ideas on places to recruit people to help:

~Get permission from a local mall to set up a table/area. The smaller the mall, the better your chances of them allowing this.

~Put a free ad in the ‘services>lessons’ section of Craig’s List asking for volunteers for a behavioral science project.

~Enlist test subjects from your school. Your teacher can help.

~Throw a ‘Behavioral Science Project’ party, and invite your friends and their parents. Make it a pot luck affair to cut down on costs.

~Reserve a room at your library, and put a sign on the door announcing your experiment.

~Get a local restaurant to loan you their ‘party room’ during lunchtime. They might even offer a coupon to participants to help you advertise your study – and their restaurant.

~Ask the human resources department at a parent’s place of business if you can set up a test in the employee break room.

~One of our boys did an experiment called Hear, Hear! It explored whether two ears hear better than one. (Complete step by step instructions for this project are available at Online Science Projects. We were required to get a group of twenty-four adults. We went to a local church before a service, and asked individuals if they would help us out. Our test was set up in a classroom.

Of course the list goes on, and you probably can think of a lot more places for your science project tests. If you’ve got some good ideas, drop us a line at our website Online Science Projects! We’d love to hear where you set up for your Behavioral science project!

Hello From Orlando – Part 9: Exploring Scenic Mount Dora On The Herbie Express

In my quest to find unusual destinations to visit in the Orlando area, I stumbled over a little town by the name of Mount Dora just about 45 minutes north of Orlando. I had read that it was a very picturesque small town located on a lake, and one of its main attractions was a scenic railway.

Mount Dora is only 27 miles or 43 km northwest of Orlando. It has an elevation of 184 feet above Lake Dora, which makes it Florida’s only “mountain top town”. Indeed the rolling hillsides and winding roads are a welcome unique feature in the generally flat topography of Florida.

Mount Dora’s history dates back to the 1800s. In 1846 Lake Dora was named for Dora Ann Drawdy. She and her husband homesteaded two miles south of Mount Dora. In 1880 the town’s first name was Royellou, named after the three children of Postmaster R. C. Tremain – Roy, Ella, and Louis.

Then in 1883 the town was renamed Mount Dora. Incorporated as a town in 1910 with 370 residents, the town now has a population of around 10,000 people. The first railroad service through Mount Dora began in 1887 and by 1915 there were two passenger trains daily in each direction. At one time citrus was the major industry in the area, with a great deal shipped from Mount Dora, while today Mount Dora’s major industry is tourism.

According to the Local Chamber of Commerce, the town also has a number of claims to fame, including:
- The Friendliest Small Town
- Best Antique Shopping
- The New England of the South
- The City of Parks
- Festival City
- Top 100 Great Towns of America
- Best Romantic Escape
- Money Magazine “Top Places to Live Today”

What drew me here personally was the ride on the the “Herbie Express”, which is part of the Inland Lakes Railway, located in Mount Dora and Eustis, Florida. The ride I went on is a one hour train ride between Mount Dora and Wooton Park in Tavares. We departed in a Pullman sleeper railcar originally built in 1949 that was later refunctioned as a commuter railcar.

The route initially takes you along Lake Dora and later continues inland past shopping malls, and suburban residences. A young conductor explained the local sights to us and kept us entertained. The Lake Eustis / Mount Dora Railway also features other train rides, such as the Lake County Champion, the Blue Swan Dinner Train, and the Magnolia Sun Lunch Train. The Lake County Champion round trip is 2 hours and 20 minutes, with an opportunity for a short visit in Eustis to enjoy Ferran Park and area shops.

The oldest structure in Mount Dora is the Lakeside Inn, established in 1883. It features a wrap-around porch, gingerbread trim and a steep roof crowned with a corner spire. The grounds are beautifully landscaped.

Many of the walking and trolley tours through this quaint town start at the former 1915 Atlantic Coast Line Depot, home of the Mount Dora Area Chamber of Commerce since 1973. Mount Dora’s most renowned architectural jewel is the Donnelly House. This Queen Anne-style structure uses design elements characteristic of the Victorian Era.

The Donnelly House was constructed in 1893 by John Phillip Donnelly, the first mayor of Mount Dora. The home sits on Donnelly Street within walking distance from downtown Mount Dora. The Donnelly House is just one of the many restored 19th and early 20th century buildings in the Golden Triangle area.

This charming little town also features a whole host of specialty retailers and is one of Florida’s largest antiques and collectibles centers. Renninger’s Twin Markets is renowned for its antiques shopping. The town also features a large variety of gift shops, fashion boutiques, decorative art galleries, interesting cafes and restaurants as well as charming bed and breakfasts.

One of my favourite features of this town, which also refers to itself as “City of Parks”, are the many public green spaces by the water. Donnelly Park, located right downtown and dating back to 1924, offers free concerts and other civic events. The park also features a tennis court and shuffleboard facilities.

After my demanding stroll through Mount Dora’s winding streets I walked down to the waterfront to Evans Park, which is located across from the lighthouse. The view from the waterfront bench was magnificent and I relaxed on the bench as I soaked up the sunshine. The park is adjacent to the Mount Dora Lawn Bowling Club, one of the largest in the United States. Its 300 member association plays host to local and regional tournaments.

Simpson Cove and Grantham Point are adjacent to Palm Island Park and feature the only inland freshwater lighthouse in Florida. This lighthouse was built of bricks and donated by local residents. Gilbert Park features a public boat ramp, picnic area, croquet court and children’s playground along Alexander Creek.

Palm Island Park features a 1700 foot fresh water hiking trail and boardwalk through oak trees draped with Spanish moss. Other wildlife, including bald eagles, and local indidgenous plants can be admired here as well.

The City hosts many major annual events such as the popular “Mount Dora Arts Festival”. This event attracts over 150,000 people each year and has been ranked among the top art shows in the country. Other events include the Antique Boat Show, Antique Car Show, Golf Tournament, Bicycle Festival, Crafts Fair and Plant and Garden Fair.

While I was exploring this charming little town, my husband played golf at the Mount Dora Golf Association. He played a beautifully manicured full-size 18-hole course, and at $18 including cart, this outing was a real bargain. The Mount Dora area also offers a variety of other golf courses, including the Black Bear Golf Club, the Country Club of Mount Dora, Deer Island Golf Club, Eagle Dunes Golf Course, Heathrow Country Estates Redtail Golf Course, the Mission Inn Golf & Tennis Resort and the Pine Meadows Country Club.

I capped off my explorations with a delicious late afternoon ice cream on the patio of the Sunshine Mountain Bakery, soaking up the sun while waiting to hear about my husband’s golf adventures. Mount Dora is a great day trip from Orlando and we enjoyed our drive back through the countryside of rural Florida.

The History of Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

This theme park opened on the 1st of October, in the year 1971. It has become prominent over the years, because it alone was recognized to be the only place to see in the large complex of the Walt Disney World Resort. Thus, people came to know this single park as Disney World. However, in 1982, Epcot Theme Park was added, followed in succession with the addition of two other destinations: the Disney-MGM Studios (1989) and Disney’s Animal Kingdom (1998). It’s good to note that Disney World’s Magic Kingdom bears a significant resemblance to the Disneyland version in California, except that the Florida version is situated on a far larger area.

The best season to visit WDW’s Magic Kingdom is from Labor Day until Thanksgiving. And from mid-February until mid-March (President’s Day to Spring Break). Normally, the best day to go is any day except Fridays and Saturdays (as locals tend to increase the population significantly on those days). For a tip, it is wise to arrive earlier than the opening time in order to get in first, before the build up of the lines. Doing this, you may get to visit more popular attractions without the long lines. In addition, this allows you to avoid rushing through the parks at a pace that tends to wear most travellers out quickly.

Additionally, when you buy tickets, try not to do so on site. Meaning, book them in advance so that you may receive them earlier. It’s a significant loss of time if you have to line up with the masses at the ticket booths. On top of that, you generally save a bit of extra money by getting them early.

Since 2005, the Magic Your Way ticket was introduced to help ticket buyers eliminate the hustles of ticket buying. It replaces the old system of the “Hopper Pass” as a more flexible option for vacationers. You have the choice of buying tickets ranging from one day to seven days (good for the four major parks). Also, you may choose to add extra options to allow you to do other things (but with extra costs, of course). This may include the visiting of more than one park in a single day, as well as allowing you to lengthen unused days up to 14 days since the tickets were first used.

Moreover, Disney also sells tickets online via their website. Make sure to order them well in advance so that they may be mailed to you as early as possible. Tickets are also available in local clubs (such as AAA), activity offices and Disney Stores. There are hotels that may sell tickets at their front desks as well (of course, those hotels are located in the general area).

If you are bringing kids with you, then it is best to first visit the Hundred-Acre Wood-themed play area designed specifically for toddlers and children. It is located in Fantasyland. Fantasyland has more to offer for children, and normally the lines for these rides build up signifcantly later in the day. It would be wise for attractions like Peter Pan and Dumbo to be your first stop (the lines get horrible as the day progresses, and Dumbo doesn’t move guests through as fast as most rides).

To better enjoy your trip, it is advisable that you plan an itinerary. Some people don’t like rigid schedules (myself included), so you may be better suited getting a basic plan, and improvising on the details from there. Going prepared will save you tons of time and frustration…time better spent enjoying your vacation!

Superoxide Dismutase, Catalase, Glutathione Peroxidase, Methionine Reductase

SOD/CAT, developed in 1983, was the first antioxidant enzyme inducer available for sale in the United States. It is a proprietary dietary supplement ingredient that is alleged to increase the body’s antioxidant defenses by increasing Superoxide dismutase (as CuMn SOD, a.k.a. SOD2), Catalase, Glutathione peroxidase, (GPx), and Methionine Reductase,[1]. The product is manufactured by Biotec Foods, a division of Agrigenic Food Company. USPTO Registration Number 2933330[1]; Patent [60864798]. According to the company’s website, information about the product has not been reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration, and the product should not be used to cure, prevent or mitigate disease.[2]

Ingredients

SOD/CAT is manufactured from glycine maxT. durum and zea mays sprouts, and includes naturally occurring prebiotic oligosaccharides, as well as probiotic bifidobacteria and lactic acid bacteria, cyanocobalamin, methylcobalamin, and organically bound selenium.

Mechanism of action

According to its manufacturer, the preparation does not function directly as an antioxidant, but like other plant-based phytoestrogens, including Resveratrol.[3][4] The preparation is claimed to induce a signaling cascade, ultimately activating the genes for a family of protective antioxidant enzymes, including Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT).[5][6][7]The preparation’s organically bound selenium separately promotes glutathione peroxidase activity,[8] and its specialized form of vitamin B-12 promotes Methionine (synthase) Reductase activitation.[9] Thus, the preparation reduces oxidative stress by increasing endogenous antioxidant enzyme capacity.

According to the manufacturer, it is formulated and designed to convert weaker phytoestrogens, which are found in many conventional foods and supplements, into stronger, higher affinity ER-beta phytoestrogens. The manufacturer believes that a high degree of timing and synergy is necessary to produce the desired intermediary compounds endogenously. The interaction of the prebiotics, probiotics, existing gut micro-flora, and the compound’s daidzein and other antioxidant polyphenols and phytoestrogens in the preparation are likely converted to S-Equol, O-desmethylangolensin and their analogues endogenously.[10] The compound is granulated rather than pulverized into a fine powder, and then compressed into coated tablets. Granulation and coating are significant factors because the critical interaction of the ingredients must occur within the small intestine, after the preparation safely passes through the stomach acids. The compounds genistein and the resulting phytoestrogens act as selective estrogen receptor site modulators (SERMs) which up-regulate SOD and catalase expression by acting as signaling molecules.[11][12][13]

Chemical structures of the most common phytoestrogens found in plants (top and middle) compared with estrogen (bottom) found in animals.

Relationship to Calorie Restriction

The exact mechanism of gene activation, the precise number and identities of the genes activated, and the primordial or evolutionary purpose behind these genes, remains unclear. However, renewed interest and research into life extension through calorie restriction, as well as extensive research into similar polyphenols and phytoestrogen compounds—though lacking scientific consensus–suggests that these genes evolved to prolong life during periods of near starvation,[14] and that these genes may also be activated directly by dietary stimuli. However, without a scientific consensus, this theory remains highly speculative.

History of Product Development

The first formal research on human subjects was the The Smith-Kline Over Sixty-five Study of a small number of people aged 65 to 78, begun in 1989 as a manufacturer-sponsored double-blind placebo controlled study conducted in Honolulu, Hawaii by Smith-Kline, Accupath. [15]. The results suggested that the beneficial, anecdotal observations of health benefit were related to increases in erythrocyte superoxide dismutase and catalase, observed after three weeks of supplementation. Participants outside the control group demonstrated an average increase in erythrocyte superoxide dismutase of 230%. A control group using a placebo consisting of the inactivated (sterilized) version of the ingredients, had significantly smaller increases in erythrocyte superoxide dismutase and catalase after the same three-weeks of supplementation. Catalase activity was measured as a function of decreasing plasma hydrogen peroxide, consisted of measurement of TBARS levels, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase levels, before and after administration of the supplement in 17 healthy adults. The substances measured are markers for oxidative stress.[16]

5 Published Clinical Studies

5.1 Chernobyl Study

In 1991, Biotec Foods-Hawaii, Ltd., Agrigenic’s predecessor, funded a study entitled “Health Effects of Cell Guard on Byelorussian children and adolescents exposed to radiation as consequence of the Chernobyl AES accident.” The principal investigators N.A. Gres and T.I. Poliakova published their findings in a Russian language journal. A translation of the study is published on Agrigenic’s website. The company’s website video promanently features interviews with the principal investigators.

5.2 Life Extension Foundation Studies

In 2005, Life Extension Foundation conducted several independent studies. In the first open-label study, 12 middle-aged volunteers of both sexes took 2000 mg daily of the product for two weeks. It boosted serum SOD levels by 30% on average while lowering blood levels of hydrogen peroxide by 47%. This is significant, because hydrogen peroxide may contribute to the inflammation of arthritis. While immune cells use bursts of hydrogen peroxide to kill viruses and bacteria, excess hydrogen peroxide may contribute to inflammation and arthritis. The 12 subjects in this study, whose average age was 58, did not suffer from arthritis but were beginning to experience normal age-related decline in their SOD levels. Two weeks of oral supplementation restored their serum and blood levels of SOD to youthful parameters. Furthermore, supplementation boosted activity of blood catalase, another antioxidant enzyme, by 47%. A second pilot study (placebo-controlled) published by Life Extension [3] examined its effects on adults diagnosed with inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. This placebo-controlled, 3-arm study involving 30 subjects over 4 weeks tested placebo, probiotic SOD/CAT and non-probiotic SOD/CAT (placebo). A dramatic 71% response (clinically defined as a meaningful decrease in pain as measured by a validated pain assessment instrument) in the probiotic SOD/CAT group vs. a 30% response in the non-probiotic group was observed. No differences were observed in the placebo group. Those who were suffering the most pain at the study’s onset experienced the greatest pain relief benefit from the product. [4]

6 Other Trade names

SOD/CAT is synonymous with the following dietary supplements and trademarks: Cell GuardSynovalex, AOX/PLX, Anti-Stess EnzymesAgeless Beauty, Extra-Energy Enzymes, SODZyme, Biovet Dismutase, and IsoSproutPlex. In Japan, the supplement is branded as V-Pet.

7 Veterinary use

As a veterinary supplement, it is marketed as AOX/PLX, Biovet Dismutase, Canine Support and Feline Support, and has been used as a feed supplement to help reduce inflammation.[17]. Some homeopathic veterinary practitioners have documented their successful use of antioxidant enzyme agonists in place of the traditional corticosteroid drugs, which can have major side effects.. [3], [4].

8 Competing Technologies

Antioxidant enzyme inducers, including SOD/CAT, Protandim, Resveratrol and Wolfberry, as well as other oral forms of S.O.D., including GliSODin and bovine liver extracts, are marketed as dietary supplements rather than as drugs.

8.1 U.S. Dietary Supplement Regulation

While still policed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, dietary supplements are regulated in accordance with the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994DSHEA[5]. DSHEA does not require the rigorous scientific proof required for FDA approval of new drug applications, (NDA). As a consequence, dietary supplements must limit their commercial speech when promoting product efficacy to so called, structure function claims, which must be disclosed in writing to the FDA and disclaimed as follows: This information has not been reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration. This product should not be used to cure, prevent or mitigate disease.

8.2 Approved Drug: Orgotein: Injectible S.O.D.

An injectible form of superoxide dismutase (Orgotein), obtained from bovine liver, is an approved drug, and has been promoted as an anti-aging agent and an effective treatment forscleroderma, radiation-induced cystitis, osteo-arthritis, inflammation, and urinary tract disorders. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the parenteral formulation of the agent as an orphan drug used for familial forms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and (FALS). [18]

Orgotein is the CuZn form of superoxide dismutase, or extra-cellular SOD1. Recent medical research suggests that FALS occurs when the SOD1 gene inexplicably begins to produce misfolded, ineffective SOD1 proteins, thereby exposing motor neurons to superoxide free radicals. More research is necessary to understand the underlying cause.[19]

8.3 Orally Ingested Bovine Extracts: Ineffective

Several dietary supplement manufacters promote bovine extracts as an oral form of S.O.D. However, the efficacy of orally ingested SOD from bovine extracts has been largely discounted.[20] Bovine extracts of SOD are rapidly degraded by gastric acids when ingested. It is essentially unabsorbed after oral administration even when enteric coated, and confers no pharmacologic activity when taken orally. While many foods (red meats, vegetables) are rich in SOD, their SOD is degraded when ingested and is rendered enzymatically inactive.

Looney Toons Cartoons, Disney Cartoons Or Hannah Barbara Cartoons?

Of the three types of cartoons, which do you like better. Just so everyone is clear, Looney Toons have characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, Tweety Bird, and Sylvester the Cat. Disney Cartoons have characters like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and Pluto. Hannah Barbara have characters like The Jetsons, The Flintstones, Tom and Jerry, Top Cat, Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, and Droopy Dog.

Choosing the Right Middle School Science Project

Science Projects were easier in elementary school. Back then, you could submit a model rocket, an egg sucked into a bottle, or a simple science report on electricity. It’s different in middle school. Middle School science teachers want creative ideas, specific elements, in depth research, and detailed logs of the whole science fair process.

Finding a middle school science project that meets all these criteria has always been a challenge for our family. Our teachers wanted an experiment based, investigative project for the science fair. There are five different types of science projects, but most of the books in the library had projects that were actually demonstrations or models. It’s very important that you read the directions from your teacher and/or the science fair, and make sure that the project your child chooses fits into the right category – especially in middle school.

Here are the five types of projects.

1. Investigative projects – Most science fairs require students to submit an investigative science project. This type of project has an experiment that tests an hypothesis. The experiment will follow the scientific method, and may require a control group. (If you’re unfamiliar with this vocabulary, check out the free resource below!)

An example of an investigative project would be “How does salt affect the boiling point of water?” This can easily be tested by our experiment which adds different amounts of salt to water and recording the temperature at which it boils.

If you see the words experiment, scientific method, control and/or variable on the project instructions, you’ll probably need an investigative project. As mentioned before, they’re not easy to find.

2. Demonstration projects – In this type of project a student demonstrate a scientific principle, and lots of time the teacher wants it presented in front of the class as an oral report. There is no true experiment performed, because there won’t be a control or different variables.

3. Research project – Basically this is a science report. Students research a topic, and write what they discovered. Any type of science topic can be used for a research project.

4. Models – For a model project, models are built to explain a scientific principle or structure.

5. Collections - In this type of project a collection of objects is displayed to give an overview of a topic. An example would be a rock collection or a display showing pictures of various animals in a specific family.

Every middle school science fair will have slightly different criteria for projects. As you search for a project, make sure it’s the type of project your school requires. If you need help, check out “The Non-Scientist Parent’s Guide to Science Fair Projects“, which has guides for all the different types of science projects – including the experiment based ones! There is a vocabulary list that gives simple definitions to those vocabulary words you learned in middle school, but promptly forgot.

Believe it or not, science projects are designed to help students learn about science. Figure out which type of project your school requires, and you’ll be one step closer to showing your child how much fun science can be!
